Session Overview

The Manitoba Chapter of the Project Management Institute (PMI) and ISACA Winnipeg are pleased to offer a two-day Workshop entitled "Power, Influence and Politics in Project Management" presented by Vijay K. Verma, PMP, MBA, P.Eng.

The more power you have, the better you are able to get the job done. Ignoring the external and internal politics surrounding your project can be hazardous. Successful project managers understand the need to evaluate political dynamics and the importance of managing stakeholders through influence. Uncover ways to manage politics at the project and upper management levels while learning practical guidelines for successful influencing. Identify eight forms of power and evaluate your own power level. Improve and refine your skills and discover methods for increasing your total power.

The objective is to develop several practical ideas that participants should be able to apply immediately to increase their effectiveness in managing projects. This workshop is highly interactive and will cover the following topics along with many individual and group exercises.

Day 1

• Importance of Human Factors in Project Management
• Power and project manager
• Identify eight forms of power and how to use them in managing stakeholders
• Evaluate your own total power level
• Characteristics and outcomes of power
• Develop strategies to increase your total power
• Definition and dynamics of organizational politics
• Difference between negative and positive politics
• Why do we have politics in project environments?
• How to control political behaviors to increase overall effectiveness

Day 2

• Three positions most people take in a political context
• Identify two main dimensions to build support for your projects
• Identify five main categories of project stakeholders and analyze the political landscape in your organization
• Develop strategies to convert your adversaries and opponents into your allies
• Manage politics at the project level
• Manage politics at the upper management level
• Recognize the role of power in terms of leader versus manager and how leadership is related to the project life cycle
• Summary and wrap up

This seminar is appropriate for anyone who needs to manage stakeholders, build relationships, negotiate successfully, and work with others to achieve results while minimizing unwanted surprises.

For PMP certified Project Managers this seminar offers 14 PDUs towards re-certification requirements.

For people applying for PMP certification this seminar offers 14 hours credit toward the 35 hour education requirement.

Speaker Information

Vijay K Verma

Vijay K. Verma (PMP, MBA, P.Eng) is an internationally known consultant, speaker, trainer and author. Mr. Verma has more than 25 years of project management experience and is currently a group leader at a Canadian national research laboratory, where he provides project management services for projects varying in size, complexity and diversity. He has presented numerous workshops for many clients from a wide variety of industries. He has written the three-volume series Human Aspects of Project Management, published by the Project Management Institute, which includes Organizing Projects for Success (Vol. 1), Human Resource Skills for the Project Manager (Vol. 2), and Managing the Project Team (Vol. 3). Mr. Verma is a PMI certified Project Management Professional, registered professional engineer and holds master’s degrees in Electrical Engineering and Business Administration. He has also been awarded the 1999 PMI David I. Cleland Project Management Literature award and the 1999 PMI Distinguished Contribution award.
